Messi Can Be Too Greedy - Maradona

Post by WFT_BigTuna on Thu Sep 11, 2008 3:47 pm

The Albiceleste legend pulled no punches during his
country's 1-1 draw with Peru in Lima and believes that things need to
be changed if the team are to become world beaters again.
Messi has been tipped to win the Ballon d'Or this year, but Maradona
thinks that the star needs to be more of a team player if he is to
become the best.
"Messi at times plays only for Messi. He forgets about his
tem-mates. If he played more along with Agüero and Riquelme then the
scoreboard could be a lot better," he told Fox Sports.
"I hope he can go on and be better than me, it would be great for Argentina."
Maradona was unhappy also at Argentina being unable to hold the lead
after scoring so close to the end through Esteban Cambiasso before Peru
netted an injury time leveller.
"It worries me that we cannot finish games off by applying more and more pressure," he added.

I agree with him, i followed the argies through the olympics and found him to be a very selfish player. He looked tired and understandably so, he was on the ball ALL the time and trying to skip into the box and score. The few times he crossed - they scored.
He seems a tempramental character too, so trying to get him to be a team player might upset him a bit !

he does appear greedy, partly due to the fact that he is just a selfish player, but also he does take two or 3 touches in the time most people take one which i think makes him appear even more greedy

however i think selfishness isnt always a bad characteristic. when you talk about the best players in the world-they all spend time on the ball. there arent as many players who pass as much as Fabregas mentioned when talkin about the best players in the world

what im sayin is generally speaking, the best players are the ronaldo's, messi's, kaka's, ronaldinho's, henry's, ibrahimovic's.

the ones who beat 3 or 4 defenders and end it with a goal

selfishness is neccessary to be the best. but players like anelka and cisse and brazil ronaldo let this get to their heads. aslong as players keep up a work ethic and hunger for the game i think they have every right to be greedy.

just an opinion lol

Selfishness is a characteristics that should not have its place on the football field, why? Because there is no "I" in "TEAM," but I do agree at times it is necessary. However, to be selfish with the ball and think its all about you excluding your team-mates will eventually cause you to be excluded and left for dead. I have seen it happened before and many players have lost their team-mates respect because of this characteristics. Now as a player you only set yourself up for getting injuried. He is young and feels he is on top of the world, but when one of the greats single you out and say you are being selfish, then Messi should take note.

there's an 'I' in 'win'

arogant players make it to the top because they have the arrogance and selfishness to try things in a match that the more 'friendly?' 'generous' players dont try

messi assists many goals, however stars-particularly attackers get recognised by goals scored-every team knows he is a world class winger, but all the hype was about ronaldo over the summer-why?-coz he scored more goals. they equal in different ways in terms of skills, they both take hits from defenders, they both like to hold onto the ball-BUT last season ronaldo took freekicks/penalties and took a shot whenever a clear site on goal was there. whereas for barcelona last season messi favoured the 'dart down the wing and pass'. its no suprise he is cutting inside more and shooting more

in all honesty though reggae-i know exactly what your on about n i think messi is just asking for a slap accross the face from his teammates-but aslong as he keeps winning games for barcelona-barcelona fans and management will want him.

hit me back lol

I got you on that, yes there is "I" in win, but remember without a team messi cant win. Right? No man is an island and no man stands alone, especially in football. I understand thinking out of the box, being an innovator and trying new things, but what makes a great player from just another player is thats player ability to play the game of football totally. That includes being an innovator and creator and also a team player. Being the best is not always about winning, you see great ones not just think about winning, but have such a love for the game that they play the total game including everyone especially there teammates. Whenever messi gets a good slap or tackle for holding the ball too long, then and only then he will start seeing the importance of playing his teammates. Got to bounce.

i sense that our interesting discussion has come to a conclusion reggae lol.

finding the balance between team play and individual arrogance is necessary to be the best. messi is too greedy at the moment (i conceed there) - he is still learning and with experience will choose the right times to pass and the right times to dribble more intelligently.

we basically agreed?
